Happy New Year!
We are delighted to announce that the New York State Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs, of which our Clubs are a member, recently received a substantial grant to increase food and nutrition in our programs!
Recently a well-respected member of our community said to me, “Do you really think food drops and meal programs are that important?” My answer was and continues to be a resounding “Yes!” Food insecurity is a growing issue in our communities, and our kids need our help.
Beginning February 4th, our organization will serve meals to our Club kids in Sullivan County through our local Boys & Girls Clubs on a weekly basis. We will time the meals to coincide with long weekends, school closures due to weather, etc. so that we ensure our Club kids are receiving enough to eat when school is not in session. This will provide 5400 meals to Club kids and Club teens in 2013 in Sullivan County, in addition to our three-times weekly dinner program at the Fallsburg Teen Center. That’s a lot of full bellies!
Starting March 1st, we’ll also have a twice-monthly backpack program that will serve another 8000 meals to Club kids and their families in Sullivan & Orange Counties in 2013. These backpacks will be given out on Fridays, with at least two full meals for a family of four, and the packs will be returned to us the following Monday.
And in an effort to be good neighbors in our communities, we’re looking forward to working with Food Bank of the Hudson Valley but also with local farmers and agribusinesses to buy LOCAL produce and food that is produced locally. Not only will we serve 13000+ meals, but we’ll be helping to stimulate the local economy at the same time.
We recognize that the Clubs receive significant support from the communities, and it’s important that we continue to support the community and local business owners right back!
If you would like to donate a new and sturdy backpack for the program, please give us a call at 845-342-8833! Thank you!
